After more than fifteen years running liveaboards out of Sorong, the question I hear most is simple: when should I come? The short answer our crew gives: October to April is the best time to visit Raja Ampat for diving, snorkeling, and liveaboards. Seas are usually calmer, visibility often hits 20–30 meters, and routes to Wayag and Misool are more reliable. Shoulder months — October and April — often mean fewer boats and better value.

November to March is peak season for liveaboards. Demand rises, and popular itineraries book out months ahead. October and April sit between peak and the windier months: still excellent for snorkeling, with a bit more flexibility on dates. May to September is not “closed” — hills are greener and sheltered bays still shine — but we adjust toward lee-side anchorages and may skip exposed crossings when swell builds. That flexibility is why a local operator matters: we change the plan to the weather, not the brochure.

- Dec–Mar — Peak calm water and visibility; book early for Wayag or Misool.
- Apr — Still strong visibility; fewer crowds than high season.

North (Wayag / Dampier) vs Misool
Northern routes via Dampier Strait, Piaynemo, and Wayag run most of the year when conditions allow. Misool crossings need calmer windows — most reliable in the Oct–Apr Raja Ampat diving season. If Misool is your dream, aim for those months and talk through dates with us before you buy flights.
Snorkelers vs divers
Snorkelers and recreational divers share the same weather window. Shallow reefs around Kri, Arborek, and Friwen stay usable even when outer sites are choppy. Manta cleaning stations are more consistent when seas are settled — something my brother Roli watches closely on daily briefings.
When to book
